After leaving Boca de Valeria the ship set sail for Manous, Brazil 800 miles from the mouth of the Amazon Here the ship disembarked passengers and took on a new set of people to begin the same journey in reverse. This gave the crew and entertainers a three day stay in Manous and Jack and three of the ship's photographers took the time to explore Brazil. They hired a water taxi to take them three hours north, up the Rio Negro River (which flows southward into the Amazon) to stay with a native Brazilian family in their windowless wood house with no electricity or plumbing. The family (Antonio, Maria, six young children and one pet turtle) spoke no English. They were poor but proud and lived very plainly. They were also friendly and as accommodating as their means allowed them to be. This was to be the experience of a lifetime for Jack.

Below we see Antonio and three of his children looking out of their front door and Maria beginning to prepare for dinner.
